Origami

http://www.chilloutpoint.com/images/2009/march/origami/dragon-origami.jpg

Origami from ori meaning "folding" and kami meaning "paper". This is the traditional Japenese art of folding paper. This art can take up to 40 hours depending on the size of the piece. The folds made with the paper are usually small and it can turn into a huge sculpted piece of paper. I was interested in this because this has some relation to what we are working on in class. There is nothing specific that you have to make with origami, it has a  very wide range of sculptures that is all left up to your imagination and time.

Purpose:
The whole purpose of this is to turn a flat sheet of normal paper into a sclupture without glue.

1. Do you think origami is a waste of time or something meaningful ?
2.What is the most amount of time you think you would spend on making a origami sculpture ?
3.What type of sculpture do you think would take the most amount of time making ?

Sculpt Away Chicago!

Sculpting is a way of turning two dimensional art works into three dimensional. You can create sculptures with many kinds on material; you can use glass, wood, clay, paper, different metals etc.
In Chicago, Primarily downtown, you see tons of sculptures. I think that sculptures are used as a way to show uniqueness, and it is very good for attracting tourist. Companies use the statues to attract business as well, customers would see them and then may go inside the establishment and make a purchase. Its sort of a way to get noticed. That’s why most sculptures are downtown and not in the urban communities.
There are two kinds of sculptures, which are abstract sculptures, and representational sculptures.

Abstract sculptures would be things like The bean, and The Blob. These are abstract because they do not have any dignified shape.

Representational sculptures would be things like statues. Statues are used to show actual things, like people and animals. The statue of  the women is Marilyn Monroe, and the statue of the lion lies at  the entrance or the Art institute of Chicago.

Since Sculptures are used to make places look better I think that more should be put throughout the city and not just downtown. If we can make a place look better why not make the entire city look better.  You can see that some sculptures have already been put in different places  in the city if you ride down Franklin Blvd from Sacramento Blvd to Central Park Ave.
Questions:
1. Do you think more sculptures should be added to urban areas?
2. Are sculptures a good way to attract people to different places?
3.Describe a sculpture that you have seen, and what did you like about it.?
