Plugs: Body modification; a short cylindrical piece of jewelry commonly worn in stretched piercings. Not called gauges. Gauges are what the sizes are called.
Plugs have historically been worn in ears.
- - - During the ancient Egyptian “New Kingdom” both females and males wore earplugs and large-gauge hoop-style earrings.
- Mesoamerican cultures such as the Maya and the Aztecs used ears pool. Ears pool is an ornament worn inserted into the earlobe. The way the Maya and the Aztecs used it, usually stretched their earlobes.
Today, we have taken this concept of stretching the earlobes, and have made it our jewelry. Plugs come in all shapes, designs, sizes, and colors. Since their size is often thicker than a standard wire earring plugs, they can be made out of almost any material. Plug materials include acrylic glass, metal, wood, bone, stone, horn, glass, silicone or porcelain.
There’s also a bad side to plugs: If you leave your plugs out for long periods of time they probably won't close back up. That's only because your ears are used to that size and are "fully stretched" to that size. But if the plug is too small, you should definitely be able to go back down, but it might take a while, and it probably won't go back to a normal earring size it might be a little bigger than that.
Questions:
- Do you think that stretching your ears is a way of expressing yourself?
- People usually don’t like plugs because once your earlobes are stretched out; they won’t go back to normal size. Knowing this, would you ever consider stretching your ears out?
- Referring to the history of stretching your earlobes, why do you think plugs have become part of our culture again?

I really don't think stretching your ears is a way to express yourself. It's just a way of style. There really isn't an explanation on how it can express yourself, yet there is a more reasonable reason on how it became a style. Plugs probably became a part of culture again because of the way people think of it. They think it's "cool" having a whole in your ear. I would so consider stretching my ears but at a small size. I would still want to wear regular earrings.
ReplyDeletePlugs are AWESOME! They look great (at least to me) and are so intriguing. Although I would like them, the idea that they will probably never be the same ever again disturbs me. I maybe fine now, but I probably wouldn't be too happy in a couple years. The prospect of pain also prevents me getting plugs as well but mostly the reversibility of the jewelry.

Plugs are not of my interest, but they are a way of expressing the physical feature of a person. If a person wants to stretch out their ears it shouldn't be a controversy of it. However, there's a certain extent to stretching your earlobes that far. Yes, people do it thinking its cool but i doubt if anyone looks at the outcomes of how it could effect them. Also, the question of is it presentable when going in for a job interview also stands. But, plugs are something fun to do and an expression of a person.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Tarsila, I mean it's something you like or you don't like but it's not really expressing yourself in my opinion. Stretching your ears can either have a really good result, or really bad. Me personally wouldbn't stretch my ears, but I do think it fits on certain people. Also I agree with Danah, I don't really think it is presentable for an interview because to me that's just not usual.
ReplyDeleteAs they say history repeats itself. And wearing huge earings was obviously apart of history, therefore it's repeating now. Also new things aren't really new. This trend is thought to be new though it isn't, nothing is new under the sun. Ideas might branch off from something old making it "newer" but its never really new, but it can still be original. -LaQuandis
ReplyDeleteI like the second picture of the girl with the blonde hair and black plugs.

I personally think that if you want to do it go ahead. Before you do it you should think of the negative effects of getting a "plug". For instance when you go to apply for a job they look at things like that and it's just not presentable too me. I wouldn't get it. I think its a way that people think its more original. Most people think its cool and most people just do it because its the new trending topic. If the shoe fits then wear it.
ReplyDeleteGetting a plug is up to you. With all do respect, there is nothing to it. All you have to worry about is what people will think about it and if you don't care what people think, then you should do it. An affect in getting a plug will have to be the size of your ear after it done, and that once it's open, it won't close. So I wouldn't get it that big.
ReplyDeleteI do think that stretching your ears is a way of expressing yourself. I say this because it is a personal choice that you make yourself. Also, it might seem cool or exciting to you and that's why you did it. No, I would never consider stretching my ears out because I don't think it looks right. I think that stretching your earlobes have become apart of our culture because so many people are doing it. This way, the idea is getting passed around quicker.
