Since the beginning of man, cave men have drawn on walls to signal there appearance and to draw objects they saw within there time. Now lets take a trip to the future and stop around the 1960's in Brooklyn, New York where Cornbread was the first graffiti artist to write on walls. Graffiti is a type of art where one writes a name or picture in order to catch attention and get their name "Up". Within the roots of graffiti A specific type of art boomed into the scene, and its name is Street art. Street art is a type of art where spray paint is hardly used but wheat paste, labels and creativity come into place. I chose this topic for One of two reasons, One: I am a graffiti artist and I believe that what I do is art. two: street artists and graffiti artists have "beef" with each other because more and more street art is being accepted.
this Video shows how graffiti can be a full time job and how street art and graffiti can form one unit
questions:
1) Would you prefer street art or graffiti to be legalized and accepted within your neighborhoods? Why?
2) Do you think its fair that street artists get no punishment while graffiti artists usually have to do time in jail?
3) If you had to choose to do graffiti or street art, which one would you choose? Why?

ReplyDeleteIf I had to choose graffiti or street art I would choose graffiti. I think graffiti is very interesting. I have noticed a lot of it lately and I have seen some true talent. I would especially love to use spray paint, rather than other utensils. I think the paint gives a really cool look. Graffiti has a lot of artists that are becoming known, and that would be awesome for people to look at your work and say "Look at that!." I look at Graffiti as art not a criminal act. (Unless it was left by a gang to mark as their territory.)
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I would want street art to be legal in my neighborhood. I live in a very diverse neighborhood and there are so many talented artist that I know personally. Those people are afraid of being arrested so they limit themselves to pieces of paper and other people do get to experience their artwork. When I think about those friends I begin to think about the others that I don't know. Street art done beautifully and respectivly can show culture and diversity among people.
ReplyDeleteI really like the topic of this piece of artwork. Being able to understand the difference between graffiti and street art is good because now I understand the meaning behind it all. If I had to choose between graffiti and street art I would choose graffiti. Graffiti is more artistic and is very meaningful. A graffiti artist is not just out tagging walls and messing up the city they are simply trying to show their artistic features. Street art is also a way of showing ability but graffiti leaves a more significant mark in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteBecause we live in a city as large as Chicago, it is an everyday event that we see graffiti on the streets. I rarely see street art and I hardly understand the difference between the two. What I do understand is that graffiti is very similar to street art but is not legalized like its counterpart. I personally prefer street art over graffiti as it usually has more meaning and are controversial topics, unlike simple graffiti. Although I acknowledge that graffiti is a type of art, I do not believe it would be beneficial to have it legalized, street art as well. These art forms should be accepted but should not be legalized because they vandalize personal properties and ruin the collective image of the community. They should be confined to only certain areas.

GRAFFITI VS STREET ART
ReplyDeleteI believe that either one is acceptable because they both express someone’s feelings. They both also look nice and bring color to a neighborhood. Instead of the neighborhood being drab and boring. No I don’t think that it is fair for one to be punished and the other innocent. You do the same thing for both of them, so one of them should not be punished. I would do street art because that is more my style, rather than graffiti.
Do i think its unfair that graffiti artists get punished and street artist dont for making graffiti? Of course I do! Why should street artist be able to draw and paint on walls and make art, but when graffiti artists do the same thing, they get time in jail? That makes no sense to let one group, who does the same thing as the other group, not get penalized for the same accusation...
ReplyDeleteFor question number 2.It is not fair that graffiti artist have to endure the punishments of making art on buildings while street artist do the same thing with no punishment. Its ignorant that when it comes down to law the two artist are separated. Both artist commit to the same action so why are there different outcomes ?
ReplyDeletei like how Tony compared street art to graffiti. Not many people know the difference between the two and i think this is very informative. i also like how he gave us background information about both and showed artist and different examples of their work.Questions number one are three are sort of similar, but still good questions. and to answer number two, i dont think that it is fair to punish graffiti artist and not street artist. Both are using art as a way of expressing themselves, and they are doing it in the same places, public property. not all people feel that street art look sbetter than graffiti so why just except one. -B.Meeks
ReplyDeleteIf I had to choose between graffiti or street art, I would choose street art. Street art is more of a "professional" thing. It is more visual. Graffiti, like you said, is more "gang related". Personally, I would prefer street art to be legalized and accepted within my neighborhood. Street art is more creative. Graffiti is usually writing inappropriate things on people's property, such as gang signs. Street art is more pretty.
ReplyDeleteJazleen.
ReplyDeleteI would prefer street art to be legalized and accepted within my neighborhood because its not gang related, you can read it and understand it and because its interesting to see its something that anybody can walk passed and be like WOW! thats actually pretty presentable and its art not just something a gang put and ruined the property. street art is also allowed by government and have permission to be put on property that belongs to the government.
If I had to choose I would choose graffiti because it seems to be much more interesting. At least to me. As I walk, I see pictures on walls that all have a meaning. Really some people woulden't know where to start. And in graffiti there's always a starting and ending point. This is exactly why I would pick graffiti over street art,
ReplyDeleteI would like graffiti to become legalized in my neighborhood because it will make the neighborhood look better. Graffit drawings are colorful and very creative. When you look at graffiti, the only thing you see is someone expressing himself using spray paint. I remember watching a documentary in AP class on graffiti. Different graffit artists believed graffiti is a way to express themselves to people and make the community look good. Some people think is vandalism, but I think its art.

ReplyDeletei think that graffiti should no the allowed because you are drawing on someone else property. i also think that street art shoould be ilegal because you are drawing on others prpoerty. Also i would prefer street art to be legalized and accepted within my neighborhood because it has meaning to it. It is not just word the picture has meaning to it.
me personally, I have always viewed graffiti and street art as vandalism. Both are illegally writing, drawing or spray painting other's property. During the summer i would go out a lot and there is a lot of graffiti and street art in the neighborhood i live in. As i would be walking outside i began to realize that street art had more of a meaning and graffiti was just plain. Even though one has more meaning and looks better they are ways for people to express themselves.

I would prefer graffiti to be legalized in neighborhoods because it looks better and it is more interesting. Also, I think that it is unfair that graffiti artists get a punishment, while street artists don't. I say this beacuse if you think about it, it's all art and the purpose is mainly the same. If I had to choose between the two , I would choose graffiti art beacause it fits my personality more (exciting and interesting).
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I would rather have graffiti legalized in my neighborhood. My neighborhood is very high class, so would say that most of the neighborhood would agree. Graffiti artist wont do the art on the side of you home. No, because both are against the law so both should have to do a far amount of time or pay a fine.I would rather do street is done in a more beautiful and meaningful manner.
ReplyDeleteJustice Watkins. In my opinion they both should be legalized. They are both apart of art. Whats the diffrence? They both should be treated equally. Its not fair that those whom do graffit get in trouble. I think they both should be legalized. The only thing i think shouldnt be allowed is when they draw on others property. How would they feel if someone wrote on their property?
ReplyDeleteJalani Ward. In the world today people are getting arrested for creating graffiti. I think this is wrong for graffiti artists to be punished while street artists go unharmed. I think this because graffiti and street art are very common, and if you punish graffiti artist then you should punish street artist also. I bring this up because if you think about it, both objects show an expression of their feelings. If both show expressions of their feelings, then both should suffer the consequences for their freedom of art expression.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I believe that street art and graffiti should be legalized. For one, because when a street artist spray paints on a wall they don't get punished. When a graffiti artist paints on a wall it's not legal. A graffiti artist should have the same rights as a street artist because, if one is banned or illegal, then so should the other. I agree with Tony when he said he's a graffiti artist and he believes that it is art that he does, and so do I.
ReplyDeleteI liked the topic of this blog post because it was something interesting. I now know the difference between graffiti and street art. I would prefer street art to be legalized and accepted within my neighborhood. I say this because it allows artists to show how creative they are whereas graffiti is just to get your name out there. No, I don't think it is fair that street artists’ gets no punishment but graffiti artists usually have to do time in jail. Both of them should do time in jail or don't punish neither one of them because it just wouldn’t be fair to punish one but not punish the other.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to choose in between graffiti and street art, I would choose street art. Street art because it won’t be illegal nor affect my record. Also, I am not much of a graffiti lover and prefer to use stencils instead. In street art I am able to express myself and this will allow for me to have a good self esteem. Having a great self esteem can allow me to be successful in life; at least this is what I believe. Street art can inspire others whether it has to do with their beliefs, experiences, etc. I, myself have been inspired by street art that I see while walking home. It’s like walking in a museum that I don’t have to pay for and get brilliant ideas from. In conclusion, I believe street art is the one that I will out of both, graffiti v. street art.

ReplyDelete2) Do you think its fair that street artists get no punishment while graffiti artists usually have to do time in jail?
ReplyDeleteIt is not fair to have different punishments when the differences between street art and graffiti are so vague. It’s commonly said that graffiti is more with spray paint, and street art is more with other materials such as wheat paste and stencils, there are a lot of times where street artists use spray paint and graffiti artists use paste and stickers. The differences are too small to treat them differently in the eyes of the law. Right now the painting is charged based on intent. The street artist is seen as trying to make the neighborhood look nicer, while the graffiti artist is seen as just trying to catch attention. This is unfair because they are both doing it without permission on someone else’s property, or on public property, and so they should be treated the same.

If I had to choose between graffiti or street art, I would choose Graffiti. First, I don't think it's fair that street art gets accepted better than Graffiti. Both types of art are very similar, so I don't get why one gets accepted, but not the other. Second, i've lived around graffiti my whole life. It's practically something I grew up with. Lastly, Graffiti is very unique and colorful. Who wouldn't want to see that. If i could choose, I'd definately go for Graffiti rather than Street art.
